Waking Up

Waking Up, again ( and again)

Have you ever caught yourself, just about you were about so say some jerky and reactive thing to your loved one, and stopped?
Stopped and taken a breath.
Stopped and looked at the other person.
Stopped and came back to the present of yourself in the moment in your body in this now.
And realized:
One: I’ve done this before, and it’s always turned to shit
Two: This is a person I love and what I’m about to say is not loving
Three: I was asleep when I wanted to say that.
Four: Now that I’m present, I have a choice.

Three is the trick, the life saver, the game changer, the path from a life of slavery to a life of freedom.
We can blather about unconditional love, and if we can’t shut our traps when the reactive stuff is about to come, we will forever be lost to this world of real love.
Conditional love is not love.
Awake, we can move toward unconditional love. And only awake.

Mindful.
Mindless.
Them’s the choices. Mindful we can stop, sense ourselves in the moment, see our partner and say something true: “I’m afraid.” “I’m lonely.” “I wish we could really connect”
Mindless we have to say something that is “wrong” with them.
Or chatter about ourselves and ignore them.

Either way: no real connection.
No real connection means no real love.

Mindful.
Mindless.
Mindless means no one is home to run our show and so it’s back to the programmed self, which is usually Ma and Pa and the decisions we made to protect ourselves when we were young.

Oh, well.

This can all sound heavy handed and yet, there is an easy way out.
The same simple stuff we started with in the first game. With the addition of sensing yourself specifically in your arms and legs and connection to gravity and breathing.

Looking your partner in the eye. Feeling your own breathing. Feeling your own ten fingers, ten toes, belly, eyes, ears & nose.  Saying simple truth.
Seems stupid maybe.
Seems boring.
And, great practice is staying value free in talking to our love.
“I feel my feet on the ground.” “I see your eyes blinking.” “I see your chest rising and falling as you breathe.” “I sense my chest rising and falling as I breathe.”
Simple. Stupid.
Real.
I am alive.
You are alive.
That’s the central plum of our existence. Realized with a love one, life becomes one of “love making” every time you sit down and say real things together.

And it’s practice, practice reigning talk in from it’s usual function which is the relief of excess.
Excess food, out as poop.
Excess air, out as outbreath.
Excess thinking , out as talking.

How to be present while talking.
Hard.
Fun.
Amazing.

And this is for the brave ones, willing to sit down each day and connect in talk and touch.

Let’s try in the simple way once more.

Talking:
Set the timer for 3 minutes as you sit near and look each other in the eye.
Partner A: talks for those 3 minutes.
Either about what they notice in themselves, or what they notice in the other.
Be informed by
Ten fingers ( and hands and arms)
Ten toes ( and feet and legs)
Belly ( and breath and pelvis)
Eyes,
Ears,
Nose ( breathing and reminder: top of the spine).

Smile.
Pause.
Enjoy silent as well as present-talk connection.

Do this twice each way.

Pause for 6 breaths between each turn.
Take a little walk before the touching part.

Touch
2 two minute turns each way.

One : stroke the partner’s hand and arm, reporting in the present on what you notice
Two: as you stroke your partner’s hand and arm, they report in the present on what they notice

Share at the end how that was for each of you, both ways.

Conditional Love

We can be serious about this
or
have a sense of humor

might as well laugh

at ourselves

admit it:

we do this:

I love you , soo, soo, much,
and
I'll love you even more if you........

that's a condition

that's a buy and sell deal

oh, well

we all do it

and the other side

I love you, but you are making it hard

and if you keep doing ......
I'm going to love you less,
or
take away my love
or
dislike you
or
hate you

notice what this really is:  BLACKMAIL

behave right,
and don't do ........

and then I won't pull out the possibilities of
loving less
taking away love
disliking
hating

go against my commandments, wishes, fears, demands,
call it what you will

but if you do ......

then wham
I'm going to do one of the four:
loving less
taking away love
disliking
hating

......
It's obvious,
but more part of the humor/ seriousness

that these reactions aren't exactly
calculated,
usually

they "just happen"

and the function is still the same:
blackmail

even worse, really,
because if "You can't help it,"
then your partner knows the hammer HAS
to fall if they misbehave

.....

this might appear to be a problem

and it is

and the work of Byron Katie is one
sterling way out of it

and

just ("just") waking up to it
and realizing our conditions,
can make a huge difference in beginning to set us free

Love is, Love Ain't

Love is love
is love

is loving what is
in front of you

an imperfect person

hurray!
just like us
imperfect

a beautiful person
hurray! hurray
just like us
beautiful

confused?
just like us

happy, unhappy, in love with you, not in love with you
hurray
just like us

they are there
aren't they
all those other pieces of God
to remind us
how to love

love what?
everything

and love ain't:

you know what it is
when someone wants you to shape up
when
someone tells you you are wrong
when
someone is conditional,
they will love you, if.....

love ain't conditional

that's a great start

all you have to do
and you can do this looking in a mirror:

is to see what's in front of you

listen to the conditions,
drop them,
and love what's left

easy
hard
impossible

who knows

without this skill,
we are in a sinking boat, full of Shakespeare quotes
and not able to swim

alas, a messy end

cheers on a cold, post snowy Friday in Austin,
Chris

Dyamnic Relationship vs Fixed Relationship

RELATIONSHIP AS A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE

Chang from the paradigm of playing for each others captivity to playing for each others freedom by changing the perspective from Fixed to Dynamic Relating.

FIXED:

1, Concept driven, predictable and secure, two halves of a whole

2. Fixed roles where the purpose is to feel loved.

3. Trust means others should live up to your expectations, always trying to be "good"

4. Angry at others ( or , big baby, "hurt")  when they aren't "doing it our way, " the way we "trusted" (= imagined) they "should" do it

5 Angry/ hurt when we aren't in control.

6. Relationship is disposable, better at the beginning

7. Both agree to conform to fixed concepts

8. Control / love with conditions

DYNAMIC:

1. Desire-driven, following the next right step, two wholes coming together, secure in themselves

2. Spherical relating that begins at and returns to Friend where the purpose is to love.

3. Trust others to be who they are, willing to be messy

4. Curious about others when their way is different than our way. Amused at our old "hurt" programming and see it as a childhood left behind.

5. Excited and the upside of freefall when we aren't in control ( call it orgasm, what the hell)

6. Relationship is eternal, stay connected no matter what the form, always best in the now

7. Both agree to be truthful, willing to negotiate, learn, and wake up

8. (Unconditional) Love

if you can't love everyone, you can't love anyone

she was good and loving and so was I

if you can't
love
everyone
you
can't love
anyone

wait, wait, that can't be right,
it's so clear that A is worthy of our marvelous picky love,
but B, C and D
aren't

and here's the rub,
since we have the right to find "what's wrong"
with B,C and D
( which is what's wrong with us that we don't want to see)

then after the glow rubs off with A,
and we've given ourselves the "what's wrong with them
is reality" lie
we are going to fire our cannons on A,
too.

it happens over and over

watch the rejecting sorts, find Mr or Ms Right, and watch it implode down
the road

ah, they think they just "chose the wrong one again."

A great relationship

A great relationship has at least these four elements:

- Great and consistent communication

- Great and consistent sex

- Unconditional love

- A big job

Let's have some fun and go one by one:

Great and consistent communication means:
- Every day
- You can say anything
- You do say everything, no secrets
- You speak in the present
- You speak truth ("I am angry" is truth. "You make me angry" is a lie)
- You go to vulnerable, and admit: "I'm afraid to say this.."
- And then you say it
- You have a method, or a practice of long periods where one talks and the
other does not interrupt
- You are learning to have no words in your head, and no rehearsal of
responses as the other talks
- You listen in the PRESENT

Great and consistent sex means:
- Every day ( relax, it can be a 15 minute Slow Sex meditation)
See OneTaste.us, the demo video
- Not necessarily climax oriented
- Playful
- Variable
- If a two way practice, eyes open
- Communicating desire, sensation
- Reversible: not a runaway train, until it is
- Full of any and all communication
- Total commitment to sensation in the PRESENT

Unconditional love means:
- All resentments are gone
- 100% gone
- You can think of the "worst" the other ever did
and feel love in your heart
and feel a smile coming to your face
- You "look forward" to their doing whatever it is
that the "it" in you, the conditioned and it's all about me-me-me
self in you (ego) is most annoyed by
- You look forward to new discoveries of their imperfection,
because that's your imperfection

- If it's ten minutes old, it's history. Living life awake and in the PRESENT.
- Humor about "I'm imperfect, you're imperfect and that's perfect"
- Gratitude around that

A big job can mean:
- Raising a sane, present, playful, happy, creative amazing child or children
- Supporting the best in each other
- Building a house, farm, community together
- Writing a book together, starting a company
- Sharing your deepest dreams and helping each other toward them
Such as
- Helping each other shift to a new job, fitness program, creative endeavor, etc
- Committing to mutual enlightenment
- Committing to "saving the Earth" without getting grumpy along the way
- Creating an organic, eco and truth community together
- Making and giving away millions to the places you want change to happen
- Ongoing every day every moment happiness for yourself and the other

- Committing to humorously helping each other live in the PRESENT

- Keeping up the daily sex, daily communication and daily resentment release
- Spreading your happiness and sanity to the world

Returning Calls, or, If you can't love everyone, you can't love anyone

this is going to cover a lot of ground oh, well

if you have various people you
don't love,
it means you have rules,
demands
conditions

they don't live up to
you don't love

and it turns out,
with that,
with your best super wonderful lover,
you'll also drag conditions in

you will
they may be subtle but you will

and phones:

when you call people
and they don't return the call,
this is usually annoying,
like,
"Don't I count for this person."

And when we don't return the call,
we are telling those people,
consciously or unconsciously,
they don't count.

Can be a power trip.
Can be revenge.
Can be feeling we are too good for so and so.
Can be the busy thing as an excuse for all the above,
and how long would it take
to call or text:
Got your call, busy now,
but hope to connect.

I did that the other day,
and within my definition of manners:
I call back within 24 hours.

So I did.
Someone I thought would be a "drag"
So what,
that's what manners are for,
to treat people well.
So I called and said I only had a few minutes
and would love to hear why they called.

Turned into twenty minutes of delight.

Oh, well.

So, people don't have to have manners about calling me back.
I like myself plenty.

And I know that when they are unconsciously telling
other people they aren't good enough,
they are doing that to themselves.

We are all one,
they say,
the mystics KNOW,
we know when we are awake,
even the uncool people
we don't have time to call back.

We are all one,
and when we shuffle off a part of ourselves as another person,
we shuffle off part of God.

oh, well.

Buddha's 4 truths and relationship

Buddha truth: 4

Life is suffering ( can be)

Suffering from grasping: cling to, push away

Is way out: enlightenment

Is path to enlightenment

Susan Piver's take on this vis a vis relationships:

Relationships are uncomfortable

Trying to stabilize deny hide from discomfort causes suffering

Unconditional love is possible

Path is:
attention, with precision , on moment and partner

openness to what see

let go of trying to control

good,
and her comment:
of Buddhist trained marriage counselor:
in 30 years never found a couple where one didn't want more away ness,
one didn't want more closeness
good
